SHEEP farmers may be enjoying a good season, but they are being warned it could lead to a fatal lamb disease.

Goitre, more common in wet years, is caused by an iodine deficiency in pregnant ewes which can be fatal in lambs.

Robert Suter, of the Department of Primary Industries, said the deficiency affects lambs production of thyroid hormones which controls metabolism.

"The thyroid keeps the animal metabolically active, and for young lambs that's heat," said Mr Suter.

Supplementing sheep – get the match right

If there’s a very best time to feed a supplement, it’s likely to be when pasture dries off. That’s because:
• It is often easier to balance dry pasture with supplement than to balance green feed with a supplement.
• Dry pasture is likely to be cheaper than green feed, so a supplement will be more cost effective with dry pasture, especially when...

"Now, while using Stubblebuster® my cattle are utilising what I had previously thought was useless grass. On love grass, my cattle have put on up to a kilo a day in what has been one of the hardest seasons on record."

Bill knows the importance of dosing animals with protein and trace minerals to ensure they make the most of dry feed but the move out to “Tyrone” a decade ago presented him with a new problem. The water there is all surface water and the lack of troughs meant Bill had to find a new way to give his herd urea in economically-manageable quantities.

Stubblebuster® Turns Dry Feed Into Money

Garry is one of Bendigo premier producers of merino wool. His property, “Kilbracken”, is located near Knowsley and that area has been as dry as any.

While some woolgrowers have been struggling with dry pasture issues such as pregnancy toxemia and tender wool, Garry’s flock has been consistently delivering quality cuts. Garry says that’s because he always makes sure his sheep have been getting supplement to make up for any nutritional shortfall in the dry feed. He’s always used blocks but last year switched to 4 Season Stubblebuster.

Phosphorus in the Biosphere

Phosphorus has a key role in DNA and ATP, two of life's most important molecules. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) carries the genetic code of all living things, and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) carries the chemical energy that powers the activity of every living cell. In addition, phosphorus is essential in the composition of bones and teeth, which are intricate frameworks of proteins and the mineral apatite.

Ewe & Lamb Press Release

A Protein / Nutrition Supplement for Ewes & Lambs.

With the successful explosion of the Australian lamb market, producers now must ensure that their lambing percentages are maximized. It all comes down to the quality of nutrition for the lambing ewe. Supplementing green-feed for high performing ewes and lambs

Dr McNeill is also a Senior Lecturer (Animal Health and Production) in the School of Veterinary Science, University of Queensland, where he specialises in ruminant nutrition.

Lush, high moisture, rapidly growing pastures still require balancing.

Such pastures are often referred to as “gutless” in coastal areas where summer rainfall predominates, but as we move into La Nina conditions this summer, we could easily see similar pastures further inland.

Salt for sheep and cattle. As old as the pyramids.

Egyptian farmers used them, as do many progressive farmers today. Natural salt based supplements are a vital ingredient for balancing rumen sodium levels, ensuring maximum ruminant production when grazing pasture or cereal crops.

If sheep and cattle lack salt (NaCl) and other nutrients that are lacking in soils, productivity of grazing animals deteriorates markedly. Phosphorus (P) and salt deficiencies in parts of Northern Australia directly affect fertility rates of grazing cattle every year.

Pre-Lamb Blocks Work In Guyra

In 2005, Bob was gutted when he lost 50 ewes to Preg Tox, despite the care he’d shown during the lambing season he knew he’d have to something different. Bob said “Losing that many ewes is just money straight out of my back pocket. You just can’t afford to lose that many ewes every year”.

Bob has long been a customer of Landmark Guyra employees suggested that the health of his flock might improve with the use of selected mineral supplement blocks. The sheep get 4 Season’s Protein 50™ throughout the year and prior to lambing; say 5 – 6 weeks, bob gives them 4 season’s Pre-Lamb block.
